The raven was there in an instant.

“Did you find it?” the hooded man demanded.

The raven shook his head no and fluttered his feathers.

The man stomped his foot on the ground, picked up a stone, and threw it as hard as he could at the raven. The stone missed the bird by a hair.

“Hey!” protested Becca. “That’s animal cruelty!”

Michael clamped his hand over her mouth. Fortunately, the hooded man hadn’t heard anything. He pulled a large pickax out of his bag and lifted one of the tombstones, revealing a hidden passageway underneath. He quickly disappeared inside. Ten minutes later, he reemerged empty-handed. Then he turned in our direction and proceeded to dig up another crumbling grave. The coffin was buried under so much dirt that the man had to use a shovel to remove it all.

He worked at it tirelessly, panting for breath, while the raven waited a few steps away, cheerfully picking at his feathers. After a while, the man emerged from the grave and flung the shovel away. He looked furious.

“What a temper,” Tyler whispered. “He looks like Becca when she gets mad.”

“That’s not funny!” replied Becca, sticking out her tongue.

“Cut it out, you two!” said Michael briskly. “Tyler, hurry up and see if you can take a picture of him.”

“Should I tell him to say ‘cheese’ before I shoot?” Tyler asked, fumbling with the camera.

“Just hurry up,” Michael said. “Quick! Before he turns around.”

Tyler held up the camera and pointed it at the hooded man. He looked through the viewfinder to make sure he had the hooded figure at the grave in sight.
